Mattress major Serta Simmons Bedding LLC has opened a new warehouse and manufacturing plant in the Seattle metropolitan area. The facility replaces two previous Washington state sites in Sumner and Puyallup that separately produced the Beautyrest and Serta brands, respectively.
SSB built the new facility in Puyallup, with construction finishing in April. The site is the fourth facility to open as part of a $100 million investment to expand the company’s manufacturing footprint and consolidate production of its multiple brands in the same factories.
At 280,000 square feet, the Washington state facility is larger than the two previous sites combined and employs 17% more people. With approximately 210 employees and an average production rate of about 1,000 mattresses per day, the plant distributes to retailers in the Western United States and in other regions, including overseas, as needed.
“We are excited to open a new, larger manufacturing facility in Seattle, a city that is a known incubator for game-changing innovation in the U.S.,” said Michael Traub, SSB chief executive officer. “This new site allows us to bring together employees from our former Sumner Beautyrest factory and Puyallup Serta factory under one roof and will help meet demand from customers across North America.”
In the past 12 months, SSB also opened larger plants in Houston; Moreno Valley, California; and Windsor Locks, Connecticut. In early 2019, it plans to relocate its corporate headquarters from Atlanta to Doraville, Georgia. That move will bring about 500 Serta, Beautyrest and SSB corporate employees under one roof for the first time.
